Xbox vs PS3 : December 2007
Ok - so you have been planning on getting your next gen console and with all the deals around this time of year your itching to buy. As of today, now that the Playstation 3 40G and Xbox 360 20G models are almost evenly priced at around $400, at first glance, you actually have a difficult choice to make. On one hand there is the PS3 Bundle from dell. It comes with the Spyder Man Blue-ray movie, Rachet and Clank: Tools of Destruction game and a 6ft HDMI cable. Your other option is the Pro Holiday Bundle that comes with the games Forza Motorsport 2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Halo 3 and a 6ft HDMI. Without doing any research, both systems look fairly comparable. However, if you have done some online searches you will find a unbelievable number of zealots pushing their favorite system or many old arguments from 2006. This makes getting a non-bias and reliable answer to what system is better rather difficult. I wrote this article because when I was looking to buy a system a month ago, I could not find a decent analysis of the current state of both systems. I will say that I am unbiased writer with no alligiances to Sony or Microsoft. Having said that, after spending a lot of time doing research on both systems I did make a purchase.
Now lets try to cut through all the hype and fanboy'ism you may have read and help you figure out what you should buy. This article is broken a few sections. Section 1 discusses the gaming hardware on board and Section 2 is about what the systems can do other then play games. For most people, the most important part is Section 3 titled "Games! Games! Games!" Here I breakdown the current state of gaming on both systems and also take a look at the foreseeable future. And finally I wrap up the article with a conclusion and some final thoughts and suggestions on what to buy given your situation.
Alright.... Section 1: The Gaming System.
So, these little boxes cost about 400$, I know they play games but what is so special?.
Visually, both systems are capable of producing the same high quality graphics. Both the PS3 and 360 output HD signals up to 1080p via HDMI output. This makes everyone with an HDTV happy because your finally using that beautiful technology sitting on on your wall. Not only that but the games look almost lifelike even if they are not using the full 1080p resolution.
In the audio department, the PS3 has a slightly better audio system. Instead of a being able to produce a meager 5.1 Channel Dolby Digital Signal, it can produce 7.1 Channel Dolby Digital Signal! For those of you with a 7.1 receiver, you can be sure that the ps3 will take advantage of it. However, while in-game music is extremely important, I am not sure that you will be able to notice a difference between the two systems.
One really nice feature that the 360 has over the PS3 right now is rumble in its wireless controller. When used well, the shaking, vibrating of the controller in your hands adds another level of immersion to the gameplay. For example in Forza 2 car racing game, I have no idea how they developers did it, but the rumble 'shifts' just right. It is fantastic and produces a feeling of acceleration. In what many would argue was a blunder by Sony, the PS3 did not ship with a remote with rumble. Luckily, they have recently announced that a rumble remote is on the way this winter at a cost of $80. While this means you wont have rumble for existing PS3 games, future ones will make good use of this feature.
Both systems can connect to the Internet via wired and wireless access points. The PS3 has built in wireless but the 360 does not. And so, if your like everyone I know whose router is NOT next to your TV, you can purchase a wireless adapter for the 360 for about $100. A perhaps cheaper alternative is to find an old router and turn it into a wireless receiver.
Pound for pound, the hardware war is won by the PS3 with better audio and wireless and rumble on the way. I am ignoring the PS3's Cell Architecture and Blue ray player. Because neither of them have yet to show an improvement difference in the quality of games. (The evidence is in Section 3 ).
Section 2. All the other things these system do!
Once connected to a router, both systems show significant differences. Both systems can connect to multiplayer games and download additional games and content but only the Xbox can download HD movies(720p/1080i), TV shows via XBox Live(XBL). The PS3 will introducing HD movie download in Japan sometime next year. So for those waiting on this service to hit North America(if it ever comes), at least you can busy yourself with the PS3's Internet browser.
A nice feature of both systems is to act as a home theater system. They can display pictures, play music and videos. One very nice feature of the Xbox is that all of these can be directly streamed from your home computer. This means that all your files on your computer will be accessible to the xbox. On the PS3 you will need to carry the data over on a USB drive or use third party software.
Of course, a major difference between the PS3 and the 360 is its ability to play read Bluy-ray Discs. Technically, this translates to the ability of having more information on a single disc. Excluding a few exceptions, the capacity of traditional DVDs has not been a significant factor affecting the game development. But!!! You can play High Definition movies out of the box. The PS3 has a Blue-ray player built in making it very cheap HD player. And although you can get your 360 to play the comparable HD-DVD's you'll need to pay $170 to buy an attachable player. On the bright side of the, you will get 5 Free HD-DVD's with the purchase.
One great feature for all the techies out there is the ability for the PS3 to run the Linux OS. This means you can have a computer directly attached to your TV. For those of you who venture to the darkside, recent advances in the understanding of the PS3's graphic card would point to 3D roms from the N64 and later 3D systems being emulated soon. This could mean you will have access to all of your favorite classic games on the PS3.
And so, the conclusion here is that both systems have fantastic capabilities in the home to act as more then just gaming systems. Each system has advantages over the other in different area's but it is a tough choice. The PS3 definitely wins points with its Blue-Ray player but the Xbox has a strong performance with its ability to download HD movies, and connect to all your home computers to access pictures and movies. And so, make sure you read the next section about games before you buy the system. You did plan on playing games right?
Section 3: Games! Games! Games!
In this section I look at the main issues with games for the PS3 and the 360. I examine current state of games on both systems and how game exclusivity affects your choice.
On the bright side of exclusivity, the developers are able to focus their development on the one console and produce a higher quality product. Of course, exclusivity hurts the consumer(you) as they(you) have to purchase the system that plays the games they(...) want.
The main drawbacks of non-exclusive titles is that developers are often forced via the economics and difficulty of game development to first develop the product on the weakest of the target system and port it to the stronger. Last generation, the ps2 was much weaker then the original xbox and this result in the xbox's power often being under utilized. While we are still early in this generation, the 360 is currently the stronger of the systems. And even though the PS3 has been used to break records in the Guinness books for computation power, game development on the PS3 has continually underperformed in comparison to the 360. PS3 games have often shipped weeks and months later then their 360 counterparts and a result there has been an associated increased in cost and risk of PS3 game development. This may in turn have an effect on publishers who are looking to minimize their risk. In the future, we will either see less PS3 titles or a changed development process where most of the game development occurred on the Playstation and Xbox functionality was added later. This should result in non-exclusive titles being essentially the same on both consoles. In this case you win as you get the same gaming experience regardless of the platform.
The impact of this whole mess of exclusive vs non-exclusive titles on your choice to buy a system is that your only need to look at the exclusives games on both system to make up your mind. After all, these are the games you cant get on both systems! And if you could buy both systems, you obviously wouldn't be reading this article. With exclusivity in mind, lets look at the stats on the games on both the 360 and PS3.
Now for the numbers.
In the following graphs below I outline some statistics I pulled from a database I created from existing sources(www.metacritic.com, www.gamespy.com). I then did some sql queries to extract the following information. *note that these queries where done mid November with exception for the exceptional category that I did in early December.
Here is 360 Vs PS3 Total Current Titles. I am looking at the number of games currently available for both system. I also include a count of the number of exclusives for each system.
Quite clearly, the 360 has the advantage with almost 200 more titles. Not surprisingly, the number of exclusive on the Xbox outnumber those on the PS3.
Now I dug a little further and looked only at the quality games. Those with reviews above 75%. It is safe to assume that these games are enjoyable and if your a fan of the genre you most likely worth buying.
The 360 wins with around 40 more games with 75% above ratings. And looking at the exclusive, the three times more decent exclusives for you to play.
Finally. The show stopper. Here is a graph of the number of exceptional(90%+) games for both consoles. These games are the best gaming experiences that either of the systems have to offer. You will want to own these games.
The current situation places the 360 with a much stronger lineup. What about the future? To get a feel for what the next few years may look like I pulled all the future release dates till 2010 from gamespy.com and looked at total games and exclusivity.
Any guesses?
So here we see that their will be no shortfall of games on either systems. You will however have more selection on the 360 and you will see almost as many exclusive on the 360 as there will be on PS3 total.
Closing this section, if you are buying a console to play games and want to play the best there is to offer on the next gen system then as of right now, the clear choice the 360. The argument comes down to quality and quantity. The 360 simply has more higher quality games and it has more games... period. The PS3 will have a strong line-up in 2008 with exclusives coming from very successful lineage on the PS2(Metal Gear Solid, ect), however we can only they do better the Rachet and Clank! After all.
Section Conclusion.
If your a gamer and want to play games, then the 360 is the way to go. It has the best gaming experiences and strongest lineups of the two systems and features a decent entertainment for watching movies and pictures. More then that the Pro holiday Bundle already gives you two exceptional games(90%+) being Halo 3 and Forza 2. If you want to play some games but need to watch blue-ray movies then go with the PS3. Enjoy your new system.
I hope you enjoyed the article and look forward to hearing your comments.

thank you..this was an excellent read! :)
the Playstation 3 has been able to stream video, pictures and music for many, many months now. the fact you missed this very accessible information puts some of your investigative skills to question. you are right about the games...i agree 100% XBOX 360 has all the good games - the article, though, should have focused on who will have the better games going forward once some of the blatant reasons why ps3 is behind become irrelevant, including the fact that ps3 game development was in its first year. perhaps there isn't a clear cut way to compare games - but you should have at least done an apples to apples compare with consideration for how long a system has been out, how many features have been added in the time it's been out, what is promised in the near future. it would have been nice to know how many exclusive titles are in development for each system from TODAY through 20008 so far...rather than a historical compare of exclusives. and for a compare of consoles, i would have really liked to see the number of defective 360 consoles vs ps3 consoles...because i think whether a system can even last a couple of months is probably something a gamer cares about.
I have read your article and enjoyed the points you have made for both systems. I started out with a 360 myself but have recently switched over to Sony.
First off I throughly enjoyed the games available for the 360 and with all the features that you have listed I will give the Xbox 360 the merit it deserves. How ever my troubles started when my hardware started to fail. I was not an early adopter purchasing the system about a year after initial release. In that time my system failed 7, yes SEVEN Times. In a total of 1 year Microsoft had the console longer that I did because every break took 1 month to be returned. Microsoft has extended their warranty policy but every time I had to deal with them it was like pulling teeth. All the content that I had purchased and saved on the Hard drive was worthless if you where not connected to the internet because everything was tied to the original system it was downloaded on. Microsoft's fix was to create a NEW user name and reimburse the download to a new name. After the eight time I gave up. Tossed it and started fresh with Sony. So far so good. Sure there are things I miss, (never got to finish Halo 3) But so far my system hasn't broken yet and that is a step in the right direction.
this is a great article. i wish i would of read it before i bought a ps3. for games, which is what i wanted, the xbox 360 is way better.
One thing that I think that was neglected was the failure rate of both consoles. I own both an Xbox 360 as well as a PS3. So far, I have had no problems with either of them, but I did attach an intercooler on my 360 just to be on the safe side. However, this makes my 360 excessively noisy. Anyways, the failure rate for the 360 is ridiculously high. I remember reading somewhere that it was at about 90 percent. For a $400 console, this is ridiculous. I admit that the 360 has very good games, but its failure rate is truly horrendous.
Good article but I think that you were wrong on your conclusion with the graphs and numbers of sales. Of course the X-box number wise will have more than the PS3. They should, if they didn't then it would be a terrible system. They have been out longer than the PS3....duh... That was the worst argument in the article. The other bad argument was to say that downloaded HD movies equals Blu-ray movies...On downloaded movies with 20GB you will pretty much only be able to download one movie at a time and then have to delete them afterwards to get a new one. Also, I am fearful of downloading anything anyways as everyone knows with computers slowing down and crashing. Maybe this wasn't a good article after all. Needs more research and better more realistic analysis.
this info is not very good to use as an idear on wot system to buy FECK me he cant even be bothered to explain how good the cell cpu is! which is in fact the best thing about the ps3 full stop, although it'll be a few years befor the software programers can get their heads rapped around the way to use the full power .... and of couse the xbox360 has more games with or with out 75% score, it dont take a hero to work out its becouse the xbox360 has been out longer. xbox360 or PS3 there both very good systems but the HARD FACTS ARE THE PS3 HARDWARD IS NEWER TECH. thats my cash well spent :)
It was a great read, I personally opted for the 360 and so far am really happy with it. Having 2 ps2's in our household should have dictated a natural progression to a ps3, but I could not bring myself to buy Sony again based on their recent megalomaniac attitude to consumers.
Starting with their Root-Kit fiasco (if youve not heard about this then google sony rootkit) which they have recently repeated on their memory sticks, plus their recent patents for technology which would mean that once you had played a game on one ps3 it would never work on another. (I realise they are not currently using this technology, but why patent it if you are not going to??) and finally I have just about had enough of Sony products always trying to create their own standards (which usually flop ie. Discman, Atrac Betamax etc).
From such a pioneering company like Sony its such a shame many people dare not buy from them due to their egotistical and profit protection racket. I realise Microsoft are never really seen as good guys, but thankfully they are not this bad, so for once, well done to Microsoft for not screwing your customers and prospect base.
Hello writer,
As mentioned in several other posts, you are not taking hardware reliability into consideration. As most of us know, the 360 is less reliable than a bycycle with two flat tires. I can't say I have any friends who own a 360 and have not had more than one problem with it. Furthermore, these future sales predictions are completely irrelevant. Third-party support will be dictated by future sales of consoles. Given the recent blow to hd-dvd (Warner bros goes blu-ray exclusive), Sony is sitting in an excellent position. They gambled, and it apprears to be paying off. Also, you mention Blu-ray gaming not having an apparent difference. That all changes as PS3 ages. Developers are already struggling to fit content on future 360 games, making real next gen games only properly developed for PS3. The likes of Killzone 2 will demonstrate this just fine, with facial detail and one level equalling the space of a dvd disk, something that 360 clearly could never do. The question you should be asking your readers is: Are you interested in present gaming, or present and future gaming? The life cycle of the PS3 will extend into the next gen Microsoft system, making it a "future-proof" investment, as Sony likes to put it. Seems like you made the poor choice!
The 1st xbox came out after the ps2 and it was a blunder in most parts(though it had a pc hard drive and xbox live, which most people never took advantage of).Now things are the other way 'round with the xbox having an upper hand. The problem is most people who support the ps3, are ps2 fanatics(over 140mil of them), who knew nothing about xbox.Naturally there's bound to be some sort of resentment from their side.MS were already at a disadvantage when they decided to take Sony on, but somehow they pulled it off and the console wasn't that terrible, despite all the negativity behind it.Sony themselves were frantic before the PS3 release(and i think the quality of games can own up to that, they didn't do their homework and took the xbox for granted.P1ssed off a lot of PS fans). Now their playing the catch up game, hopefully attracting more users with better games coupled with the slowly growing blu-ray market.I used to be a PC game fan, and hated consoles, but the Xbox really did it for me.The extra wifi and HD players aren't needed in my books, and I'm sure the prices for stand alone players will drop(with the blue-ray declared a winner). And like the author said, if I need wifi, I'll just use my router...purchased at an even lower price.I'm thinking the PS will eventually catch up(with prices dropping and better SKU's coming out). Those 140mil fans arent simply gonna switch to the darker side.I will stay an Xbox, simply because...well, it's the first console I've ever enjoyed playing on.
Reasons why I don't see why you should get the PS3?
- One thing people forget about technology, is that it improves every year. The blue-ray wont cost much in 3-4 years time.
- Even though the cell processor is more powerful than the xbox, the xbox has a better GPU.And with the time it's taking to get better games on the market, I'm not prepared to wait or shelf my console because the games are bad.
- installing OSs like linux on the console isn't childs play if you're not a keen computer "geek"(and most console users aren't).
- There's this install feature(some mandotory)most PS3 users also forget about. Some games(eg. DMC4) need to be installed before you play them, taking up 5-7GB(so far) over +-20minutes.If you rocking a 20GB PS, you in trouble already.
- Using a large disc like blue-ray means you either install your games to reduce load times(dealing with the shortage of space as time goes on) or wait long for your PS to read the large amount of data on the discs.
All I'm saying is that, the PS killed Sega, The 1st Xbox, and kept Nintendo on a leash. This time 'round, tables have turned, opening up the field for even better consoles in future. This had to happen, and I'm glad it did.
"Good article but I think that you were wrong on your conclusion with the graphs and numbers of sales. Of course the X-box number wise will have more than the PS3. They should, if they didn't then it would be a terrible system. They have been out longer than the PS3....duh... That was the worst argument in the article."
This is the dumbest thing I've read all week (I read a lot, too!) What does it matter if the Xbox 360 has been out longer? The fact remains that the Xbox 360 has more games! Why they have more games is irrelevant.
If you read this article trying to decide what system to purchase I would go with the Xbox 360.
More games, better features, amazing online (Although it will cost you $1.40 a week), better support, and the controller feels much more comfortable with desired features such as rumble.
Remember it's about games. :)
Get the PS3 as a second system down the road for movies.
Hope this helps,
Dave
I bought my xbox 360 on the night it was released and i would rather have it any day of the week over ps3. The games are awesome and the online multiplayer is in a different legue! I hired out a ps3 for a week when it came out played it for the first day then went straight back to the 360! I have had the hardware error with my 360 but xbox replaced my console even if it hapens again i will stick with it because frankly nothing else compares!!
Who cares what the PS3 can do, game systems were bought to play games, if you guys want your Blu-Ray then buy a damn Blu-Ray player, but dont for one second think about jumping online and saying how great the PS3 is becuase it has one.... I personal liked playstation over xbox for the longest time, then Microsoft launched the Xbox 360, ever since this console came out i was absolutely shcoked at how my playstation couldnt stack up to the xbox, i dont care for the dualshock controller, its a crappy invention for my genre of games(FPS) and all other aspects of the console cannot stack up to the 360......
Avinash is a bullcrap liar, he cant even properly form a sentance without making an error on every word, and his puncuation is worse then that of a grade 6 girl..... so stop making this up, admit you made a bad choice on selecting a game console, and stop trying to convince us and yourself that you choice is justified, becuase its not, you failed to see the potential of the 360 and you thought the PS3 is cool becuase of its somewhat crazy/un-needed perks. Game consoles are for Games !
dont matter at this point, new microsoft system coming out in late 2009~ early 2010,
Does Xbox have the RDX... no. Do I own either of those systems... no. Do I know which is better... Yes. PS3 is hands down better hardware, and seeing as games like Final Fantasy (cant forget Dragon Warrior) come out for PS3 ONLY, . Why should people listen to what I am saying. Because I will never buy a system, that's what friends are for. "Counterstrike > Halo" and if you don't like that comparison, "mouse and keyboard > controller". Period. Graphics wise? Do you know that you can re-skin your p.c. games if you know what your doing with computers? So my game from two thousand whenever can actually look pretty damn comparable to halo? Great. Consoles are only good for sports games. Unless you own a NINTENDO. For the record, XBox and PS3 failed miserably next to Wii. Shouts out to Nevian for using the term GOING FORWARD. All you talked about was the past. We live in a world of declining standards, which has got to stop. Looking at whats come from the past (with regards to VIDEO GAMES) has no bearing on the future... Except that NINTENDO will always own whatever company that tries to beat it, but props to SEGA for trying.
oh and for the record, with my previous comments,(READ ABOVE Starting from RDX) Asus P6T6 WS REVOLUTION with four GTX280's and an I7 (The thousand Dollar Version) is Greater that ANY system on the market
